MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women's rowing team is set to travel to the Head of the Charles, the world's largest two day crew event, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Boston.
The women will try to improve on last year's effort in the Collegiate 8 where they finished second behind LeHigh. The boat beat out Louisville in the race by a mere second. All eight girls, Michelle Heier, Donna Stullken, Meg Ayers, Kendra Hamilton, Amelia Payne, Kirsten Leslie, Gaetane De La Bourdonnaye, Caitlin Everett and Jess Martini, return from last year's competition.
"This year I think we have the guns to win it," said head coach Nancy LaRocque. "Our practices have been going really well and the women are looking forward to attacking the course a little stronger and wiser."
The Collegiate 8 race gets underway on Sunday at 12:40 p.m. Results from all of the races will be posted on www.hocr.org.
The 38-year-old event put on by the Cambridge Boat Club annually draws nearly 300,000 spectators and 7,000 athletes to the banks of the Charles River. Crew enthusiasts of all ages compete in the 21 different various race events. More than 35 colleges are prepared to compete over the weekend including Connecticut, Villanova, Ohio State and Colorado.
