It’s simply too hard to tell whether or not Gary Waters has Rutgers back on the right track. Two years ago Waters surprised everyone by leading an undermanned Scarlet Knights team to an 18-13 record.
Last year Rutgers came back to earth winning just 12 of 28 games including a 4-12 record in conference play.
Waters has a pair of talented players to work with in 6-foot-10 forward Herve Lamizana and 6-4 guard Ricky Sheilds, but getting erratic Lamizana to play tough defense and cut down on his turnovers has been one of Waters’ main objectives.
Six-one Calvin Wooten showed some offensive flashes as a freshman averaging 6.0 points per game, but must overcome an ACL injury sustained last spring.
The coach has also had a tough time getting recruits to Rutgers and keeping them there after they sign on the dotted line. The latest casualty is Canadian scoring whiz Antwi Atuhene, who failed to earn admission into school.
Quincy Douby was one of the top scorers in the New York City League averaging 35.6 points per game as a senior and could be a factor this winter, though reviews on him are mixed.
Six-five Marquis Webb is another newcomer who could work his way into the rotation.
Rutgers has a soft non-conference schedule and also has favorable repeat games against Miami, Seton Hall and Virginia Tech.
