Hurricane coach Perry Clark hopes to end a slide that saw Miami go from being one of the Big East’s elite programs two years ago to barely making the conference tournament last season.
Eight times Miami lost a game by five points or less and finished the season with its first losing record since 1995-96.
Clark has one great building block to work with in 6-foot-10 senior Darius Rice, an 18.7-points-per-game scorer last season who four times last year hit a three-point basket at the buzzer to either win a game or send it into overtime.
Six-two Robert Hite showed promise at off-guard averaging 7.3 points per game while making 18 starts. Armando Surratt started 15 games at point guard and averaged 6.5 points and 3.3 assists per game.
Promising backcourt recruits Guillermo Diaz and Anthony Harris could also become factors.
Six-nine sophomore Gary Hamilton and junior college transfer Leonard Harden could battle for James Jones’ spot at forward. Jones was an NBA lottery pick after averaging 16.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game last year.
Vincent Baker, one of Miami’s top recruits from Atlanta, Ga., failed to qualify academically and instead enrolled in prep school.
Like Georgetown and Boston College, a favorable early schedule will help Miami.
