Boston College is in the midst of a major overhaul this year that has been complicated by some dismissals, preseason injuries and a key recruit deciding to rescind his commitment and stay closer to home.
So where do you start?
First, BC coach Al Skinner knew he was going to have to replace the school’s all-time scoring leader in Troy Bell. Then last spring Andrew Bryant was dismissed from the team and after that, Ryan Sidney left the program for personal reasons.
That paved the way for top recruit Dan Coleman of Minnetonka, Minn., to have second thoughts about Boston College and he decided to opt out of his commitment to BC in favor of staying closer to home at Minnesota.
If that weren’t enough, preseason injuries to Craig Smith and Nate Doornekamp have got Eagle supporters wondering what’s next.
BC was able to recover from the Coleman decision in time to sign 6-foot-6 forward Jared Dudley of San Diego, Calif., and it has three other pretty good recruits on campus in forwards Devon Evertsen and Sean Marshall, and guard Steve Hailey.
When preseason practice begins the Eagles will have just nine scholarship players in uniform until Smith and Doornekamp return to the fold. One positive is the return of 6-foot-8, 262-pound Uka Agbai, who sat out most of last year after suffering a serious neck injury. Agbai averaged 11.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game two seasons ago.
Making the transition smoother is an almost ridiculous out-of-conference schedule that should net BC at least 10 victories before the start of league play.
