MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Ohio State's Josh Daugherty's upset victory over sixth-ranked Billy Smith in the last match of the night lifted the seventh-ranked Buckeyes (4-1) to a thrilling 21-14 win over the sixth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (1-1) Thursday night at the Coliseum.

"It's a hard way to lose it, especially in such a hard-fought match," Turnbull said. "I said going into this match that we were going to take a lot out of it no matter the outcome, and that's still the approach. It's just obviously more fun when you win.”
Senior Shane Cunanan (141), ranked 12th in the nation, scored a stirring 3-1 overtime win over No.13 Jeff Ratliff to cut OSU’s lead to 15-14 and seemingly gave WVU momentum heading into the final match.
However, Daugherty quickly took Smith down, got him to his back, and pinned him within the first minute of the match to secure the victory for Ohio State.
The Buckeyes raced out to an early 6-0 lead after No. 2 Keaton Anderson's (157) 6-1 win over Matt Lebe and No.5 John Clark's (165) 11-7 win over No. 9 Tom McMath.
McMath pushed Clark around early in the match and scored the first offensive points before surrendering a late takedown in the third that gave Clark the victory.
WVU jumped back into it on a dominating 19-7 win by No. 1 Greg Jones (174). In the match, Jones took Anthony Magistrelli down seven times, scored two back points and was awarded a penalty point for stalling. The Mountaineers took their only lead of the match at 7-6 when No. 15 Ryan Wilman (184) escaped with just under :10 remaining in the tiebreaker against Casey Kaputska.
Adrian Thompson (197) got deep on a few offensive shots against OSU's No 6 Anton Talamantes, but could not finish on any takedowns and lost 3-1. Heavyweight Brent Miller slowed defending NCAA champion and second-ranked Tommy Rowlands down but only managed an escape in his 3-1 loss which gave Ohio State a 12-7 lead.
Things looked worse for the Mountaineers in the next match as redshirt freshman and No. 20-ranked Seth Lisa (125) was taken down early by Nathan Costello, but Lisa regained his composure and control of the match as he recorded four takedowns and three near fall points in the final period to cruise to a 23-10 win.
The Buckeyes got a little breathing room when Jesse Leng upset No. 11 Brandon Lauer 9-4 in overtime at 133. Lauer had some offensive opportunities late in the third period as well as in the overtime but could not convert before Leng took him down and scored near fall points for the sudden victory.
West Virginia returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, in the EWL opener on the road at Bloomsburg before heading to the NWCA National Duals the following weekend.
