West Virginia had a chance to either tie it or win it with 15 seconds left trailing by two, but Yolanda Paige’s driving layup was off the mark and Thomas grabbed the key rebound.
West Virginia had a difficult time shooting the basketball. The Mountaineers made just 17 of 58 field goal attempts for 30.3 percent. Forward Michelle Carter managed just 4 of 16 from the floor, Kate Bulger was 5 of 13 and Paige was 3 of 11.
Seton Hall wasn’t much better shooting 40.4 percent, but the Pirates managed to hit 48.3 percent of their field goals in the first half to build a seven-point lead at the break.
West Virginia came out in the second half and went on an 11-5 run to claim a 36-35 advantage at 13:18, and led by three at 38-35 and 40-37 before going cold. The Mountaineers went nearly a four-minute stretch without scoring a basket to let the Pirates retake a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Thomas was the only Seton Hall player to reach double figures with 15 points.
Bulger led WVU with 14 points, Carter scored 12 and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Latitia Williams came off the bench to contribute 10.
The loss was West Virginia’s 10th straight in conference play dating back to last year and drops its record to 11-6, 0-6.
Seton Hall improves to 11-6, 5-2.
West Virginia resumes conference play at Notre Dame on Saturday, Feb. 1.
