Swimming: WVU Splits Triple Dual Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The West Virginia University swimming and diving team lost to Virginia Tech, but swept American in a triple dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the War Memorial Pool.
The men's squad (8-5) topped American by a 147.5-91.5 count and lost to the Hokies 157.5-83.5. The WVU women (7-7) fell to Virginia Tech, 125-72, but were victorious by a score of 149-70 over American.
Leading the way for the men's team was all-Big East junior Kleyton Franca, who notched a total of three individual wins on the day. Franca claimed victory in the 1000, 200 and 500 freestyle events for the Mountaineers.
Sophomore Matt Drozd's 21.00 clocking in the 50 free topped all American swimmers but was slightly behind the 20.62 mark of Virginia Tech's Christian Lindberg.
Mountaineer sophomore Pedro Pinto swam a 1:52.51 in the 200 butterfly to finish first while the 400 freestyle relay squad of Drozd, sophomore Thomas Fletcher, junior Travis Watson and sophomore Kyle Gallo stopped the clocks at 3:12.06 to top all American swimmers and place second against Virginia Tech.
The women's squad was paced by sophomore Livia Cascao, whom placed first with a 52.86 in the 100 freestyle and second with a 24.61 mark in the 200 freestyle.
WVU senior Mary Dabkowski notched a 2:27.62 for a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke while junior Lee Ann Johnston swam a 2:12.64 to claim victory in the 200 backstroke event.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, to face conference foe Connecticut, at 1 p.m., in Storrs, Conn.
