MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University's gymnastics team (4-1) rebounded from a poor performance last weekend with a season-best 194.775 team score to defeat Eastern Michigan, who tallied a 192.2, Friday night at the WVU Coliseum.
WVU is now 3-0 all-time against Eastern Michigan.
It was a near clean sweep for the Mountaineers, as WVU had three top place finishers in every event except for floor exercise. Senior TeShawne Jackson won the all-around with a 38.925 while fellow senior Dinorh Boyd won balance beam (9.85) and floor (9.95) on the evening.
West Virginia entered the contest as the nation's eighth best vaulting team and didn't disappoint as it opened the night with a season-high 49.25 on the apparatus, just one tenth of a point shy of tying the school record, set in 2000. Jackson and sophomore Kari Williams paced the Mountaineers with a 9.925 and 9.9, respectively.
On bars, WVU received career-bests from Carri Nagle and Alyssa DeSantis who each tallied a 9.85 en route to a 48.45 team score and a 97.7 overall score.
Despite counting two falls on beam, Nagle and DeSantis again paced the Mountaineers with career bests of 9.85 and 9.8, respectively. WVU scored a 47.85 on the event and after three events led the meet with a 145.55.
Rounding out the competition, WVU scored a season-high 49.225 on floor and received 9.9 or better scores from Boyd and Jackson (9.925).
Jackson's two 9.9 or better scores give her 40 for her career, a Mountaineer record. She has scored at least a 9.9 on vault in every meet this season.
On the night seven career-bests were either set or tied by Mountaineer gymnasts while at least two WVU freshmen saw action in every event.
West Virginia is back in action at No. 9 Michigan, Saturday, February 8, at 7:00 p.m., in Ann Arbor, Mich.
