MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University's gymnastics team is ranked 21st nationally in the preseason coaches' poll released yesterday by the National Association of Gymnastics Coaches.
UCLA is the preseason No. 1 with 20 of 31 possible first place votes. Seven future Mountaineer opponents also earned preseason rankings: Michigan (6), Florida (8), Arizona (10), Denver (16), Penn State (19), North Carolina (24) and Maryland (25).
WVU will hold its annual Blue-Gold Meet Sunday at 2 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. Guest judges include WVU men's basketball coach John Beilein, women's basketball coach Mike Carey and former All-American Kristin Quackenbush.
"I'm rather surprised that we're ranked after losing all the seniors from last year," Coach Linda Burdette said. "But it's always nice to be recognized and we're looking forward to our season. We really need this competition on Sunday with all of the newcomers that we have. We need to be out in front of people and in the Coliseum. It's a great preview and a good practice session for our season."
