The Lady Friars led by as many as 11 in the first half before West Virginia cut into the lead. The Mountaineers eventually took their first lead of the game at 2:28 to go on a layup by Kristen Kilgore to make it 29-28.
The two teams played to a 35-all halftime score.
It looked like West Virginia was getting control of the game early in the second half when the Mountaineers scored the first five points to make it 40-35, but Providence fought back.
A key play in the game came with 7:40 left when Kristin Quinn made a three-point shot and was fouled by Kate Bulger. She completed the four-point play to turn West Virginia’s one-point lead into a three-point deficit.
The Friars capitalized on missed West Virginia opportunities down the stretch and made their free throws and to run away with the 14-point victory.
Providence shot 57 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Mountaineers 37-26.
Kate Bulger led West Virginia with 17 points. Sherell Sowho scored 14 before fouling out, and Yolanda Paige contributed 10.
Six-two forward Michelle Carter, who scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in West Virginia’s last game against Villanova, managed just three points before fouling out midway through the second half.
Liz Holbrook, returning to action after missing the Villanova game with a high right ankle sprain, could manage just five points on two-of-seven shooting.
The victory boosts Providence’s record to 7-7, 2-2.
West Virginia has lost three straight in conference play and drops to 10-3, 0-3. The road doesn’t get any easier for the Mountaineers Saturday when West Virginia plays host to Virginia Tech at the Coliseum for a noon game.
The contest will be televised by MSN.
