Swimming: WVU Women Finish First

NOTRE DAME, IND. – West Virginia University’s 400-meter freestyle relay team of LeeAnn Johnston, Devlyn Quinn, Livia Cascao and Jackie Graulty finished first with a time of 3:29.07 on the final event of the day Saturday to lift the Mountaineers to a first-place finish at the 2002 Notre Dame Invitational.

With 1,266 team points, West Virginia edged Iowa, Denison and Bowling Green for top honors.
Devlyn Quin also took first place honors in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.63 and freshman Jessie Banner placed first in the women’s 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:32.46. Quinn came back in strong fashion in her event after finishing fifth in the prelims.
The West Virginia University men’s team placed third behind host Notre Dame and Wyoming with 1123.5 points.
Kleyton Franca was WVU’s top peformer on the men’s side, placing third in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:01.67 and fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.30.
The Notre Dame women and the Wisconsin-Green Bay men only sent divers to the meet.
After a holiday training trip, West Virginia resumes regular season competition on Jan. 10 at Duquesne.
