Track: Holiday Classic Results

MORGANTOWN W.Va - The West Virginia University track teams hosted the annual WVU Holiday Classic today in the WVU Shell Building.
In 32 total events the Mountaineers tallied a total of 17 first-place finishes. Junior sprinter Ciara Chic, of Charleston, W.Va., led the way with three first-place finishes. She won the 60 meters (7.54), 300 meters (41.27) and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay. Chic also won the 60 meters at last year's meet.
Freshman Junique Morris, of Alexandria, Va., placed first in the 200 meters (25.01). Jessica Czaikowski, of Tottenham, Ontario, won the 60-meter hurdles (8.91). The freshman also ran a leg on the winning 4x400-meter relay team.
The women's distance squad started the year off right with three first-place performances. Amanda Love won the 5,000 meters (22:03.8) and Jennifer Davis won the 1,000 meters (3:04.93). Megan Metcalfe, fresh off of a ninth-place performance at the NCAA cross country championships, won the mile(4:44.15).
On the men's side, junior Blake Pearson, of Cheverly, Md., had a stunning performance in the 200 meters (21.93), outdistancing his competition by almost two seconds. Sophomore Dwayne Higgins, native of Ajax, Ontario, won the 60-meter high hurdles (8.03). Pearson and Higgins made up the second and fourth leg of the 4x400 meter relay that took first.
In distance the men's team had a stellar day. Ben Lukowski won the 5,000 meters (15:45.1), Nick Albanito won the mile (4:27,12) and Matt Pettit won the 3,000 meters (8:46.13).
Other first-place performances were turned in by Pam Richardson in the 500 meters (1:15.48), Megan Mlinarchik in the high jump (1.64 m) and 2002 BIG EAST indoor champion Erin Nett in the pole vault (3.81m). Nett competed as an unattached athlete.
Teams that attended the meet were Frostburg, Marshall, Duquesne, Robert Morris and Concord. In addition to Nett several unattached athletes also competed.
"This is a nice meet to gauge how our fall training went," says West Virginia coach Jeff Huntoon. "My staff and I are pleased how the kids performed out there today."
The Mountaineer track teams return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the WVU Invitational. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. in the WVU Shell Building.
