MORGANTOWN, W.Va - West Virginia University track coach Jeff Huntoon announced today the signing of three recruits for the 2003-04 season.
Halimah Bashir and Rhea Mann, both of Willingsboro, N.J., and Abbie Stechschulte of Columbus, Ohio, have all signed national letter of intent.
Bashir, a seven-time high school All-American, is expected to make an immediate impact on the Mountaineer relays anywhere from the 4x100 to the 4x400-meter relays. Last season, she won the 400-meters in the New Jersey Group Three Indoor Championships and placed sixth in the 200 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Indoor Nationals. She also participated in soccer and softball as a freshman at Willingsboro High.
Mann, who is a high school teammate of Bashir, is expected to participate in the intermediate hurdles and the middle distance events at WVU. As a junior at Willingsboro High, she was named to the 2002 All-South Jersey girl's track team. Mann competed in the 4x200-meter relay at the 2002 U.S. Track and Field Indoor Nationals.
Stechschulte, a multi-event specialist, is expected to compete as a heptathalete for the Mountaineers. At Columbus Grove High, she is a two-time state qualifier in the long jump, one- year qualifier in the high and intermediate hurdles and a member of the state-qualifying 4x100-meter relay that placed third overall. Stechschulte is also a standout volleyball and basketball player.
"We are excited to have these three fine athletes make a commitment to our program," says coach Jeff Huntoon. "We expect for Hallmah and Rhea to make an immediate impact in the BIG EAST on our relay teams and Abbie is going to be a top-performer in the multi-event competition."
