MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team, which ended the 2002 season with an 18-3-1 record, finished the year as the 12th-ranked team in the nation, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
The final NSCAA poll of the year ranks the Mountaineers above conference foe Notre Dame (15) and regional rival Virginia (17). West Virginia defeated both the Fighting Irish and the Cavaliers during the 2002 regular season, but were ousted from the NCAA tournament by Virginia in the second round.
WVU had unprecedented success this past season, breaking or tying six team records en route to a BIG EAST regular season divisional title and its winningest season to date.
The Mountaineers spent six weeks in the top 10 of the NSCAA's national poll, rising as high a No.7 during the week of Oct. 28. Overall, West Virginia was nationally ranked by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 12 of the 14 polls, including the preseason and final polls.
