MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University coach John Beilein announced Tuesday that guard Jay Hewitt has left the team.
“Jay Hewitt has decided to transfer to a Division II school it looks like right now, ” said Beilein. “I did not want him or urge him to do that but I do support his decision. He’s a great kid and we wish him well. He really wants to play and by mutual agreement I guess he believes it’s going to be hard for him to break into this lineup right now.”
Hewitt, a junior from Richwood, W.Va., played in 24 games last year as a sophomore, making three starts. The 6-foot-6 Hewitt averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds per game in 2001.
He did not see action in West Virginia’s first six games of the season.
West Virginia plays host to Western Carolina Wednesday night at the WVU Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
