CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Bowl officials announced today that the inaugural Continental Tire Bowl sold out of tickets early Saturday morning, less than six days after announcing its match-up between Virginia and West Virginia.
With total ticket sales numbering 73,258, the Continental Tire Bowl has far exceeded expectations for a first year bowl game.
"We are extremely proud and excited to announce that the Inaugural Continental Tire Bowl is a sellout," said Ken Haines, Executive Director for the game. "The support from both the schools and the Charlotte community has been exceptional. We estimate that Virginia has sold over 20,000 tickets and West Virginia has sold over 30,000 tickets. This is probably the fastest sellout in the history of first-year bowl games, and may be the first time an inaugural bowl game has sold out."
College football's first bowl game to call the Carolinas home, the Continental Tire Bowl will take place on Saturday, Dec. 28th at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte. Set to kick off at 11 a.m., the game will be televised live on ESPN2.
West Virginia begins practicing for the bowl game tomorrow and wraps up the Morgantown portion of practice on Friday, Dec. 20.
The team will depart for Charlotte on Saturday, Dec. 21 and will begin practicing in Charlotte on Monday, Dec. 23.
