MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Drew Schifino scored 18 points and Kevin Pittsnogle added 17 to help West Virginia to a 70-67 victory over James Madison Saturday night at the WVU Coliseum.
Schifino hit seven-of-18 field goal attempts and three-of-four free throws for his game-high scoring total.
Tyrone Sally scored 10 off the bench for West Virginia, now 2-1.
“Obviously we are very fortunate to get a win when we shot as poorly as we did in the first half,” said West Virginia coach John Beilein. “James Madison has a veteran team. They shredded our zone. We’re happy to get this win, especially with so many freshmen, sophomores and juniors playing major minutes.”
Forward Ian Caskill led James Madison with 15 points.
All five of West Virginia’s victories over James Madison in series play have come in Morgantown.
James Madison held a 38-32 lead at halftime.
“Did we let it slip away? Yeah I feel that way. This is one I thought we had a shot at,” said James Madison coach Sherman Dillard. “We played well enough to put ourselves in position to win the basketball game. When the clock ticked down they had a three-point lead.”
“We have huge holes in our communication on defense, and it’s not going to get better for a wile because we’re so small and the defense is so different from what the kids have played before,” said Beilein.
West Virginia resumes non-conference action against Florida on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2002 at the Charleston Civic Center. Tickets ca be purchased by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office toll-free at 1-800-WVU GAME.
James Madison drops to 1-2 on the season.
