MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rifle team captured the championship at the Mountaineer Open this afternoon at the WVU Rifle Range in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Mountaineers' finished competition with a 4661 in smallbore and 1542 in air rifle for a team total of 6203. The Acorns from Fairfax, Va., finished second with 6049 (4540 smallbore, 1509 air) and the Romney, W.Va., 4-H club came in third with a 5447 (4037 smallbore, 1410 air). The New Martinsville, W.V.a, Rifle Club only competed in air rifle and shot a 1321.
"I think the match was very successful," Coach Marsha Beasley said. "Several competitors, both from WVU and from other teams, shot personal bests. The scores were quite high, espically in air rifle."
WVU swept the smallbore competition. Nicole Allaire finished first with a 1177, Wade Tyner in second with 1169 and Jon Hammond rounded out the top three with a 1168.
In air rifle, Kristin Scott from New Martinsville shot a 395, good enough for first place. Mountaineers Amber Crist (394) and Allaire (391) finished second and third.
"I think this was a good way to start the season," Beasley said. "I know the team is looking forward to our first Great American Rifle Conference match of the year."
The Mountaineer's are idle until Nov. 15, when they travel to GARC rival Kentucky.
