Women's Basketball: WVU Defeats Akron

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team (3-0) defeated Akron (0-3) 77-26 in the first round of the RazeWV.com Hoops Bash on Friday evening at the WVU Coliseum.

Four Mountaineers scored double figures, led by junior Sherell Sowho with 14 points to give West Virginia its first three-win start since the 1999 season. Behind Sowho was Michelle Carter (13), Liz Holbrook (12) and Kate Bulger (12). Tonight's 12-point effort was Bulger's third double-figure game of the season.
West Virginia controlled throughout, owning a 37-17 half-time lead, and used a 40-point second half to seal the victory.
The Mountaineers last won a game by a 50-point margin on Dec. 30, 2001, when they defeated Robert Morris 89-39. Akron's 26 points was the least amount scored in a game against West Virginia at the WVU Coliseum since the 1975-76 season when West Virginia Wesleyan was held to 27. The Zips' nine points in the second half was also an opponent low for a half.
West Virginia returns to action against Coppin State (2-1) in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Eagles defeated Troy State 59-54 in the first round of the tournament. Akron will face Troy State in the consolation game at 2 p.m.
