Women's Soccer: Academic All-American Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two West Virginia University women's soccer players, goalkeeper Melissa Haire and defender Christen Seaman, were named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America team.
Seaman, a Belleville, Ill., native, was a first team selection. The senior defender started all 22 matches for the Mountaineers in 2002, and played an integral part in West Virginia's school record 12 shutouts. From her back row position, she scored one goal and tallied one assist. Her lone goal came in West Virginia's 3-0 win over Loyola that advanced the Mountaineers to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. Seaman played a key role on a Mountaineer defensive unit that allowed only 13 goals on the season. She is a pre-veterninary medicine major with a 3.75 GPA.
Haire, a second team selection, graduated first in her Mechanical Engineering class with a 3.93 GPA and is currently working on her Master's degree. The starting goalkeeper for the past three seasons, she saw limited action in 2002 due to a broken finger. In ten matches played, Haire allowed only seven goals, tallied four shutouts and recorded 31 saves. A Lewisburg, Pa., native, she was a Verizon Academic All-America third team selection in 2001 as well.
