MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Rutgers' Josh Gros scored with just over three minutes remaining in regulation to give the Scarlet Knights (8-6-3, 5-3-1) a 1-0 victory over West Virginia (4-10-2, 1-7-1) in BIG EAST action Saturday afternoon at Pony Lewis Field.
Gros' goal came after Chris Karcz' shot from the right corner was deflected to Gros on the left side of the box. Gros got the ball past the outstretched arms of WVU keeper Chris McKinney with a strong shot from 10 yards out at the 86:25 mark.
Rutgers held a decisive 20-5 advantage in shots, but West Virginia had several legitimate scoring opportunities by getting the ball deep in Scarlet Knight territory. However, the Scarlet Knight defense constantly thwarted scoring opportunities by forcing the Mountaineers to make long crossing passes instead of shots toward the net. Rutgers keeper Ricky Zinter was relatively untested all day, making just one save in 90 minutes.
Eight out of WVU's 10 losses have come by one goal this season.
West Virginia will conclude BIG EAST play against Georgetown on Monday, November 4, at 3:00 p.m. at the Mountaineer Soccer Complex.
