MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women's basketball coach Mike Carey today announced the signing of Pittsburgh native Meg Bulger for the 2003-04 season.
A 6-foot guard entering her senior year at Oakland Catholic High School, Bulger is ranked as the 29th best player and the eighth best guard in the nation by All-Star Girl's Report, the nation's leading women's basketball scouting service. In her career, she has led the Eagles to three consecutive WPIAL championships, the 2001 PIAA Quad A state championship and two state runner-up finishes (2000, 2002).
Averaging 23.0 ppg and 4.5 rpg a season ago, Bulger received many accolades and honors in leading Oakland Central to a 30-3 record. She was named one of the country's top 10 juniors by USA Today and garnered first-team all-state honors. She was also named the WPIAL Player of the Year, a 16-and-under National Texas All-American and she competed at the USA Olympic Development Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. She led Oakland Catholic to the Midland Tournament championship and was named MVP for her efforts
As a sophomore in 2001, Bulger was named to the USA Today's top seven sophomores in the country list, was the 15-and-under national Oklahoma leading scorer, led her team to the Central Dauphin tournament championship and was named a KDKA-TV athlete of the week.
A two-time District 7 Player of the Year, Bulger has been twice named to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's "Fabulous Five" and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's "Terrific Ten" as a sophomore and junior. In 2000, Bulger was named the WPIAL Freshman of the Year. In her three years as at Oakland Catholic, Bulger has guided the Eagles to a 72-5 overall record.
"We are very excited to have Meg join our program and become a Mountaineer," Carey said. "She's a quality individual on and off the floor and we expect her to make an immediate impact on the program. She can play several positions effectively for us, which will give us a lot of versatility. I am looking forward to coaching both Meg and Kate next year."
Bulger is the younger sister of current Mountaineer junior Kate Bulger, and former Mountaineer standout and current St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger.
