MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The West Virginia University women’s basketball team won its first exhibition game of the 2002-03 season 88-77 against the OGBM Legends at the Coliseum Sunday.
WVU led by as many as 14 points after playing OGBM even in a 39-39 first half. Sherell Sowho led the Mountaineers with 22 points, including three 3-pointers. Yolanda Paige added 19 points and a team-best six assists; Paige was 9-9 from the free throw line. Eartha White earned a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Kate Bulger and Liz Holbrook added 11 points each.
“This was a good opening test for our team, and it certainly shows us how much we need to improve,” said WVU head coach Mike Carey. “I am pleased that after starting out cold, we improved our shooting in the second half.”
WVU shot just 34.3% from the field in the first half, but improved that accuracy to 54.8% during the second half.
Helen Darling led OGBM with 21 points before fouling out. Randi Peterson had 12 points,14 rebounds and a game-high four steals, while Larecha Jones added 18 points and Vita Redding tallied 13.
