STORRS, CONN. -- Salla Ranta scored the game’s only goal to led the Northeast Division’s No. 1 seed Connecticut to a 1-0 victory over the Mid-Atlantic Division’s No. 1 seed West Virginia and the title of the 2002 BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon. UConn had appeared in seven title games without winning the crown before 2002.
For her efforts in the BIG EAST Championship, Ranta earned the Most Outstanding Player Award with two goals throughout the championship. Connecticut (18-2-1) held a 16-6 edge in shots. Husky goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis made four saves to post her sixth shutout of the season.
No. 9 nationally-ranked Connecticut earns the BIG EAST’s automatic bid to the 64-team NCAA Women’s College Cup. No. 7-ranked West Virginia (17-2-1) and several other conference teams await at-large bids. The field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 11 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPNNews.
