Women's Tennis: Duo In Championship Match

Columbia, S.C. - Freshmen Melissa Day and Raynie Theis will represent the West Virginia University women's tennis team in the flight A doubles championship match of the Southern Intercollegiate Women's Tennis Championship in Columbia, S.C. The duo beat Rachel Key and Taylor Lynch of Presbyterian College (8-3) and Catherine Brown and Magda Wojdylo of South Carolina (8-5) to advance to the championships. The championship match will be on Sunday, November 3, at 12:00 p.m.
Freshman Catherine Koontz and senior Anna Marie Underwood will play for third place in flight B doubles. The pair swept Salem Kirven and Victoria Moody of Appalachin State (8-0) but fell to Ana Stiglic and Richele Lesaldo of Clemson (1-8).
"This is the best I have seen our doubles teams play this year," coach Dan Silverstein said. "Individually, I believe everyone is playing well and I hope to see some Mountaineers in the finals."
In singles action, Day fell to Jodi Kenoyer of South Carolina in flight A singles (6-0, 6-1). Koontz advanced to the second round of flight B singles by defeating Kasia Finkowska of Appalachin State (6-1, 6-2). In flight C, Underwood lost to Stephanie Koot of Costal Carolina (7-5, 6-3) and junior Jennifer Watkins beat Kristen Cotton of Western Carolina (6-2, 6-0). Theis defeated Katie Vanewyk of Western Carolina (6-1, 6-1) to advance in flight D.
Competition will resume at 9:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 2, at the Sam Daniels' Tennis Courts.
