MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball coach Randy Mazey has been named the recipient of the Chuck Tanner College Coach of the Year Award, the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh announced.
 
Mazey will receive the award at the 11th annual Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Rivers Club in Downtown Pittsburgh.
 
"I am incredibly honored to receive this award," Mazey said. "It is a true credit to the program as a whole, starting with the players, staff and administration. It wouldn't be possible without an entire team effort. Chuck Tanner was a very successful manager for many years, and it is an honor to be presented with an award with such a prestigious name associated with it."
 
"This honor is well deserved for Randy and speaks volumes for the season our baseball program turned in last year," WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. "Chuck Tanner was a great leader for the Pirates, and Randy has done an excellent job of transitioning our baseball team into a highly competitive Big 12 program."
 
Mazey led the Mountaineers to the NCAA Tournament in 2017, their first since 1996 and 12th in team history. WVU finished 36-26 and advanced to the NCAA Regional final for the third time in the program's 125-year history.
 
A native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Mazey is in his sixth season as head coach at West Virginia. He owns a 160-127 mark with the Mountaineers and is the fifth-winningest coach in WVU history.
 
Under Mazey's leadership, West Virginia has quickly risen in the Big 12 Conference, finishing in the top four in three of the Mountaineers' first five years in the league. WVU has advanced to the Big 12 Championship semifinals twice, with a championship game appearance in 2016.

Several other awards will be presented at the banquet. Phil Coyne, the 99-year-old Pirates usher since 1936, will receive the Chuck Tanner Lifetime Achievement Award. Former MLB first baseman Sean Casey will receive the Service Above Self Award, and baseball writer Claire Smith will receive the Sally O'Leary Distinguished Women in Baseball Award. The Chuck Tanner Memorial Award and the Chuck Tanner MLB Manager of the Year Award will also be presented, and the recipient will be announced at a later date.
