Cashin Caps Season at NCAAs

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Amy Cashin of the West Virginia University track and field team competed in the semifinals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, in Eugene, Oregon.
Cashin opened up competition for WVU in the women’s semifinals 3,000-meter steeplechase at Hayward Field. The Werribee, Australia, native fell short of qualifying for Saturday’s finals, as she placed 19th with a time of 10:11.86. This was Cashin’s first time competing at the national championships. The top five from each heat advanced to the finals plus the next best two.
“Amy has had a wonderful year,” coach Sean Cleary said. “Another big step in her career by advancing to the NCAA Finals. My belief is that Amy will leave this meet with an even greater determination to be standing on the podium next year. A school record, an NCAA finalist and an All-American award. We will build off of this and emerge better for it.”
WVU’s second NCAA qualifier, junior Shamoya McNeil, will represent the Mountaineers in the women’s triple jump finals on Saturday, slated for 6:40 p.m. ET.
McNeil claimed her bid to the national championships, after placing 11th in the triple jump with a clearance of 13.04 meters (42’-9 ½”) at regionals. A native of Portland, Jamaica, McNeil holds the second all-time best mark in WVU outdoor history of 13.21 meters (43’-04 ¼”) set at the 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Championship.
The pair are the first to qualify for the event since WVU alumn Kaitlyn Gillespie in 2015.
