Santos Earns Conference Player of the Week Honors
September 27, 2016 12:30 PM | Men's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer junior goalkeeper Jose Santos has been named the Player of the Week by the Mid-American Conference (MAC) on Tuesday.
Santos, who has led the Mountaineers (6-1-1) to a school-record seven consecutive shutouts, earned his first MAC weekly accolade of his career and is the first honoree for WVU this season.
A Marrero, Louisiana, native, Santos has not allowed a goal in more than 705 minutes and posted a pair of shutout wins last week. He made a career-best seven saves in WVU’s 3-0 win against American on Sept. 20, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first time this season. He followed with a four-save outing at UNCG on Sept. 24.
With seven shutouts in his first season at West Virginia, Santos has moved into a tie for No. 9 in program history for most shutouts in a career. WVU’s seven consecutive shutouts is the longest streak in program history, and Santos has not allowed a goal since the first half of WVU’s season-opening game against No. 9 Seattle.
Nationally, Santos ranks No. 1 in the country in both save percentage (.923) and goals-against average (0.215). WVU also leads the nation in shutout percentage (0.88).
Additionally, junior midfielder Jad Arslan was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Men’s Team of the Week on Tuesday, after he scored the game-winning goal at UNCG on Saturday. It was his first goal of the season and second career game-winning goal.
West Virginia, which ranks No. 12 in the NCAA RPI and in the top 20 in three national polls, is off to its best start to a season since 2006, when the Mountaineers began the year 6-0-2.
The Mountaineers return home to begin their final four-match homestand of the season against St. Mary’s (Calif.) on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff is set for noon ET, and admission is free for all fans, courtesy of WVU Medicine.
