Women’s Hoops Nonconference Slate Unveiled
August 05, 2016 09:36 AM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has announced the 2016-17 women’s basketball nonconference schedule.
The Mountaineers will play 12 regular season nonconference games and will participate in the inaugural Savannah Invitational during Thanksgiving week. West Virginia will play eight home games at the WVU Coliseum and one home contest in Charleston, West Virginia.
“This nonconference schedule provides a nice balance for us as we prepare our team for Big 12 conference action,” coach Mike Carey said. “We will be challenged early on with games against Auburn and Ole Miss. I am very excited about our team this year and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish.”
As previously announced, West Virginia opens the season with an exhibition game against Concord on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Robert C. Byrd High in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Net proceeds from the game will benefit those affected by the flooding in West Virginia in June.
The season officially tips off on Saturday, Nov. 12, when the Mountaineers meet Charleston Southern for the first time. West Virginia then hosts MEAC members Howard on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and Coppin State on Saturday, Nov. 19.
West Virginia’s lone regular season tournament appearance will take place in Savannah, Georgia, in the inaugural Savannah Invitational from Nov. 22 to Nov. 24. The Mountaineers open the tourney against defending MEAC Tournament Champion North Carolina A&T on Monday, Nov. 22 and then play American Athletic Conference member East Carolina on Tuesday, Nov. 23. WVU will play its first of two SEC opponents when the Mountaineers conclude the tourney on Thursday, Nov. 24 against 2016 NCAA Tournament participant Auburn. Tickets for the tournament are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting www.savannahinvitational.com or by calling (912) 651-6556.
West Virginia returns for six consecutive home games, including High Point (Nov. 27) and Morehead State (Nov. 30). WVU faces Ole Miss in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Sunday, Dec. 4 and then after a six-day hiatus hosts USC Upstate on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The Mountaineers return to Charleston this season to play Longwood at the Charleston Civic Center on Saturday, Dec. 17. The nonconference slate closes in Morgantown when WVU faces Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday, Dec. 21. The Big 12 portion of the schedule will be announced later this summer.
In 2015-16, West Virginia finished 25-10 overall and 12-6 in the Big 12 for a third place finish. The Mountaineers made an 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and reached the postseason for a 10th consecutive season.
