Women’s Soccer: Alumni Update
March 20, 2012 10:06 AM | General
While the West Virginia women’s soccer team is deep in its spring season, Mountaineer alumni are also busy competing in a variety of professional leagues overseas.
We start with former WVU All-American and Sky Blue FC midfielder Carolyn Blank. With the recent postponement of the 2012 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) season, Blank was chosen to join Sky Blue on a Japanese tour with Plenus Nadeshiko League club INAC Kobe Leonessa. The two teams will be playing a pair of exhibition matches in Kagoshima and Okinawa this week as part of a 10-day adventure in Japan.
“We are so fortunate to be able to experience an international trip with the suspension of the league,” said Blank prior to her departure. “I am really looking forward to training with some incredible players and learning a lot about Japan and its culture.”
Blank will likely continue her career with a W-League team in the Virginia area upon her return from Japan.
All-BIG EAST forward Megan Mischler has returned to Sweden after a two-month stint last fall. The former Boston Aztec Breakers Reserve standout is playing in Stockholm for Hammarby Damfotboll of the Swedish Norrettan Division 1 league. Mischler moved to Sweden earlier this month, and the league runs until early November.
Former All-BIG EAST striker Kim Bonilla has played for a number of international teams, most recently in Australia. Bonilla is close to signing back with the Illawarra Stingrays of the New South Wales Premiere league. The season runs through August, and participation in the W-League awaits Bonilla when she returns.
Joining Bonilla in Australia is All-BIG EAST forward Blake Miller. Miller, who graduates in May, will join the Stingrays to defend their premier league championship which concludes in August.
"I was very disappointed to hear about the WPS suspending play,” said Miller. “However, it did lead me to an amazing opportunity to play for a well-respected team in Australia. I am very excited to be part of the Illawarra Stingrays.”
Teammate Erica Henderson has signed a contract to play in Iceland for Afturelding FC. Afturelding is a member of Iceland’s top league – Urvalsdeild. The season begins in May and runs through the middle of September.
“I’m so proud of our alumni who chose to continue with their playing careers,” said WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Each one has worked hard to develop her tactical and technical abilities that led WVU to championships and will continue their success at the professional level.”
