MORGANTOWN,W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team fell to Cincinnati, today, in a 1-6 match at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
"Today was disappointing for all of us," says coach Tina Samara. "This loss hurt more than in the past because of how hard they have been working the past few weeks."
Newly paired sophomore Emily Mathis and freshman Mary Chupa captured the first win of the day in a 9-7 match in the No. 1 doubles spot against Cincinnati’s Lindsey Lonergan and Caitlin O’Gara.
The Bearcats captured the doubles point, after winning the two remaining matches in the No. 2 and 3 spots.
Junior Veronica Cardenas captured the lone singles victory of the day in the No. 3 spot, with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 third-set victory over O’Gara.
The Bearcats came back against Chupa and freshman Melis Tanik, who were defeated in the No. 1 and 3 spots.
Mathis also fought to the third set in the No. 2 spot, but fell 6-2, 2-6, 1-6 to Cincinnati’s Jasmine Lee, to clinch the match for the Bearcats.
The match finished with a 1-6, 2-6 loss by sophomore Liv Pettersson in the No. 6 spot, followed by No. 5 senior Ashley Pilsbury falling to Cincinnati’s Safiyya Ismail, 4-6, 6-4 (11-13), in a match-ending tiebreaker.
"Now, they need to learn how to get through some nerves," adds Samara. "Unfortunately, hard work doesn't show up in results as quickly as we might like. They need to get back at it, work even harder and eventually, the wins will follow."
The Mountaineers will continue action on Sunday, March 13, with two home matches against Army at 10 a.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. match against BIG EAST foe Providence.
