MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer player Zach Johnson was named BIG EAST co-Goalkeeper of the Week, the conference announced today.
Johnson was pivotal in the Mountaineers’ pair of shutouts last week.
At Pitt on Oct. 6, he played all 110 minutes between the posts and made two saves. He also gathered several crosses in front of the net, nixing any scoring opportunities by the Panthers.
The Lumberton, N.J., native registered five saves in the tie at home against then-No. 13-ranked Connecticut on Oct. 10. Again playing all 110 minutes, Johnson also demonstrated his strong passing abilities, finding teammates all around the pitch on goal kicks.
Nationally, Johnson ranks 10th in goals-against average (0.489) and 27th in save percentage (.838).
The redshirt junior collected his sixth and seventh shutouts of the season, which ties him for the league lead. For goalkeepers who have played in more than half of their team’s matches, he has the second best goals-against average clip at 0.49. His save percentage mark ranks him sixth in the BIG EAST.
It is the second time in Johnson’s career that he has won the goalkeeper of the week award.
The Mountaineers return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for a home match against non-conference foe Elon. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
