MORGANTOWN, W.VA. – The No. 19-ranked West Virginia University (5-1-0) women's soccer team defeated No. 24 James Madison (3-2-1) 3-0 at the Mountaineer Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Laura Kane beat James Madison keeper Jessica Hussey with a shot from 18 yards out in the 29th minute to put the Mountaineers on the board. The score would be all WVU needed, but West Virginia got an insurance goal from freshman Marisa Kanela six minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
The Mountaineers took advantage of a James Madison mishap when a Dukes defender knocked the ball into the net for the final goal of the match.
The victory against James Madison is WVU's fifth in a row, and its second consecutive victory over a ranked team.
"Coming off a big win Friday, we were fatigued both mentally and physically today," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, "but we came out, worked hard and got the job done against a very good team."
The Mountaineers travel to Pitt on Wednesday, Sept. 18, for their BIG EAST opener. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. .
