MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Earlier this month, West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee was named chairman of the Big 12 Board of Directors, and now West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons will preside over the conference’s ADs as chair of the Big 12 Athletic Director’s Council.
As chair, Lyons will organize all meetings, presiding over such important league issues as television, scheduling, championships, finances and so forth.
“It will be an honor to chair the AD meetings,” Lyons said. “I have been saying for a long time that the Big 12 Conference athletic directors are unified in their goals for the league. I look forward to the coming year.”
Lyons, who became West Virginia University’s 12th athletic director in 2015, has served on several important national committees during his lengthy tenure as a college athletic administrator.
In 1995, while employed as associate athletic director for compliance at Texas Tech, Lyons served a two-year chairmanship on the NCAA Legislative Review Committee.
From 2004-08, when he worked for the Atlantic Coast Conference, Lyons chaired the NCAA Division I Interpretations Committee for two years, and later chaired the NCAA Division I Legislative Council for one year.
And, in the short time he has been at WVU, Lyons has already served on the Big 12’s Administration, Finance and Budget Committee and the Big 12 Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee.
“We have a great group of leaders who not only want the best for their universities, but for the Big 12,” Lyons stated.
His responsibilities chairing the Big 12 Athletic Director’s Council begin on July 1.
