38 Oklahoma Sooners
West Virginia Mountaineers
Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell to No. 38 Oklahoma on Sunday, as the Mountaineers dropped a 4-0 decision on the WVU Tennis Courts in Morgantown.
WVU (4-15, 0-9 Big 12) opened the contest by winning a doubles match, but the Sooners would rally to take the doubles point, as Oklahoma was able to best the Mountaineers in two of the three matches. On the third court, Paula Goetz
and Lyn Yuen Choo
dropped OU’s Lily Miyazaki and Christiana Brigante, 6-1, to open the match. Ann Selim and Simran Sethi would then best the tandem of Habiba Shaker
and Sofia Duran, 6-3, on court No. 3 to even the battle for the doubles point at one apiece.
No. 78 Julie Byrne and Malene Stripp then defeated Kaja Mrgole
and Christina Jordan
to give the Sooners the doubles point and the 1-0 team advantage.
“We had an OK performance today,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “It was great to be able to honor Kaja (Mrgole) and everything she has done and dedicated to the program over the last four years.”
The Sooners would claim first three singles matches of the contest to secure the 4-0 victory over the Mountaineers. Brigante defeated White in two sets, 6-3 and 6-0, to give OU its first singles victory of the day. At the No. 5 slot, Rosiello fell in two sets to Ann Selim to extend the Sooners’ team lead to 3-0.
No. 30 Miyazaki would defeat Mrgole in two sets, 6-2 and 6-3, to claim the 4-0 victory for Oklahoma.
The matches on courts two, three and four remained unfinished due to clinch rules.
The Mountaineers honored lone senior Mrgole before the match in front of a crowd of 102.
“It was very good to see the crowd get into it from the start,” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “We had a nice crowd out here. It’s always good to play in front of our home crowd. It was great to see President (E. Gordon) Gee stop by. He is always keeping up with how things are going in season so it was great to see him here showing his support.”
WVU heads to the Big 12 Championship in Norman, Oklahoma, which begins on April 27. As announced by the league on Sunday, the No. 10-seeded Mountaineers face No.7-seed Kansas at the Headington Family Tennis Center in a 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT first round match on Thursday.
