5 Texas Tech Lady Raiders
Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell to No. 5 Texas Tech on Sunday, as the Mountaineers dropped a 4-0 decision at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.
WVU (4-13, 0-7 Big 12) opened the match by conceding the doubles point, as Texas Tech was able to best the Mountaineers in two of the three contests. On the third court, No. 73 Alba Cortina-Pou and Alex Valenstein bested Sofia Duran and Abigail Rosiello
, 6-0, to open the match. No. 29 Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici would then best the tandem of Kaja Mrgole
and Christina Jordan
, 6-4, on court No. 1 to secure the doubles point for the Lady Raiders.
and Lyn Yuen Choo
were leading No. 56 Felicity Maltby and Gabriela Talaba, 5-4, when the match was suspended due to clinch rules.
“We had a solid start today with Kaja (Mrgole) and Christina (Jordan) as well as Paula (Goetz) and Lyn Yuen (Choo),” fourth-year coach Miha Lisac said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t find a way to capitalize on our opportunities.”
The Lady Raiders would claim first three singles matches of the contest to secure the 4-0 victory over the Mountaineers. No. 10 Talaba would best Mrgole in two sets, 6-0 and 6-1, to give Texas Tech its first singles victory of the day. At the No. 5 slot, Duran fell in two sets to Federici to extend the Lady Raiders’ team lead to 3-0.
Alba Cortina-Pou would defeat Rosiello in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1, to claim the 4-0 victory for the Lady Raiders.
The matches on courts two, three and four remained unfinished due to clinch rules.
West Virginia will take a week break before heading back to Morgantown for a pair of matches against No. 9 Oklahoma State on Friday, April 21, and No. 41 Oklahoma on Sunday, April 23. Friday’s match is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m., while Sunday’s match is set to start at noon. Weather depending, both matches are to be played on the WVU Tennis Courts, located just below the WVU Coliseum. Live stats from both matches will be available at WVUlivestats.com.
