MORGANTOWN, W.VaThe West Virginia University rowing team will travel to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to take on Alabama and Tennessee on the Melton Hill Lake in the first ever Big 12 Duals on Saturday, April 8.
“The primary goal for this weekend is to execute a more complete race from start to finish; that’s both a technical goal and a competitive goal,” coach Jimmy King said. “We’ve been working on specific race elements in training throughout the week and now it’s time to nail it down in racing.”
West Virginia will begin the event on Saturday with a dual race against Big 12 affiliate member Alabama. The morning session between the Mountaineers and the Crimson Tide is slated to begin at 10:15 a.m. ET, with a new race starting every 30 minutes and ending with the varsity eight competition at 12:15 p.m.
WVU has crews racing in five events in both of Saturday’s sessions. The first varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four and the third varsity eight boats will all be competing.
After a two-hour rest period, the Mountaineers will take on Big 12 affiliate member Tennessee on Saturday afternoon. Racing is set to commence at 2:15 p.m., with the third varsity eight boats. The final race of the event will be at 4:15 when WVU’s varsity eight crew squares off with their Volunteer counterparts.
Saturday’s contest marks the second of three events this spring that the Mountaineers will compete in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. WVU opened the spring season at the Cardinal Invitational and will compete at the Big 12 Championships in Oak Ridge on May 13 and 14.
The Mountaineers have been paired with conference affiliate Old Dominion and will not compete against the Monarchs. Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and No. 5 Texas will compete in another Big 12 dual event in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
