MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team completed the first day of the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, on Friday.
The Mountaineers started Friday’s competition in field events and will continue with track events on Saturday.
“Tonight was a nice little step for us,” said coach Sean Cleary. “The vaulters came out and competed much better than a week ago. We need to keep progressing from this point. Confidence should be much higher as the season progresses.”
West Virginia got things started in the women’s pole vault blue division. Juniors Sara Finfrock and Rebekah Lafata
tied for fifth as both earned season-best marks of 3.68 meters.

The Zips host 24 teams at Stile Athletics Field House, including No. 12 Michigan, Ashland, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Cardinal Stretch, Dayton, Duquesne, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Malone, Marshall, Michigan State, Mount St. Mary’s, Ohio, Rio Grande, Saint Francis (Pa.), Sam Houston State, Toronto, Washington and Jefferson, West Virginia, Windsor and Xavier.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will split in a pair of meets on Feb. 10-11. Select members of the team will travel to compete at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Washington, and others will take the short trip to Huntington, West Virginia, to compete at the Marshall Invitational.
