MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  – To open the 2016-17 season, the West Virginia University swimming and diving team held its fourth annual Gold-Blue Intrasquad Meet on Saturday, October 1, at the WVU Natatorium.

For the second year in a row, the Gold team defeated the Blue squad in the 22-event intrasquad meet, winning by 65 points. The Gold team held on throughout the meet with a total of 231 points to the Blue team’s 166.

“It was great to see the team spirit and energy on the pool deck today,” said coach Vic Riggs. “We had some very solid swims that we can build on and use as we move forward into our season and some things that we noticed that we can start working on in practices.”

Junior Amelie Currat and sophomores Emma Harris and Tristen Di Sibio helped the Gold squad earn its victory with two individual victories apiece.

For the Blue team, senior Emma Skelley and sophomore Merwane El Merini both posted two individual wins.

The Mountaineer divers participated in three synchronized diving events, pairing each individual in two’s based on their best forms.

Freshman Gerald Hodges appeared in his first diving meet as a Mountaineer. Juniors Alex Obendorf and Mike Proietto and sophomores Madelyn Woods and Julia Calcut also participated on the springboard.

WVU will officially open the season when the team travels to Huntington, to compete at the WV State Games from October 7-8.
