MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After grabbing an early lead, the West Virginia University women's tennis team survived a late rally to best Marshall, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon, at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
"We won a battle today," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "Marshall hung tough, and credit to them, they put themselves in position to be successful. It was good to see us step up in doubles and singles to bring home the win today."
WVU (7-7, 1-2 Big 12) began the match with the advantage after winning two of the three doubles matches. On the second court, Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz earned a 6-3 victory over Marija Bogicevic, while Anne-Sophie Courteau and Giovanna Caputo claimed the doubles point for the Mountaineers when they topped Ana Marhuenda and Brooke Lashway at the No. 3 slot.
On the first court, Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran were knotted at five with MU's Stephanie Smith and Maddie Silver when the match was abandoned due to clinch rules.
The Thundering Herd began singles play by tying the match at 1-1, when Stephanie Smith defeated Jordan, 6-1 and 6-0, on the first court.
On the third court, Choo earned her third consecutive singles win, when she dropped Bogicevic 7-5 and 6-2, helping WVU regain the lead, 2-1. Duran extended the lead with a two-set, 6-4 and 6-2, victory over Marhuenda at the No. 5 court.
The Mountaineers would drop the next two matches as Marshall rallied to tie the match at 3 apiece. At the No. 6 position, Caputo fell to Lashway, 4-6 and 3-6. Marshall evened the match when Anna Smith dropped Goetz in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4.
After winning the first set 6-0 over Silver, Courteau fell in a second-set tiebreaker to force a match-deciding third-set. Courteau won a back-and-forth finale, 6-4, to secure her second match-clinching win of the season.
West Virginia will be back in action next weekend as it hosts a pair of Big 12 Conference foes. The Mountaineers take on Kansas State on Friday, April 6, beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET. WVU concludes its homestand on Sunday, March 18, against Kansas. First serve for Sunday's match is slated for noon ET.
