The Mountaineers (25-11) advanced to the WNIT Semifinals for the third time in program history with 76-62 win over St. John's in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Senior forward Teana Muldrow's career-high 33 points led the way, setting a new WVU postseason record. Muldrow also made a career-high 14 free-throws, the most by a Mountaineer in a WNIT game and the fifth-most in a single game in program history.
Junior guard Katrina Pardee went 6-for-10 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc for 15 points on the day, while junior guard/forward Naomi Davenport had 12 points and a pair of blocks in the win. WVU shot 51 percent, marking the third time in four WNIT games the Mountaineers have shot 50 percent or better.
On Monday, Muldrow was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts. More impressively, she was named a 2018 Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention for her performance this season. Muldrow will cap her career ranked in the all-time top-five in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and double-doubles. In addition, she is WVU's all-time leader in games played.
After an 11-year hiatus in the longtime rivalry between the Mountaineers and the Hokies, the two meet for the second time this season on Wednesday. The series dates back to Feb. 22, 1978, when WVU grabbed a 75-72 win in Morgantown. Tech leads the series 11-6. Prior to November, the teams had not met since Nov. 13, 2006, when the Hokies claimed a 60-56 neutral-site win. WVU has not hosted Tech since Feb. 10, 2004, when the Mountaineers picked up a 69-66 win at the WVU Coliseum.
"We had been scrimmaging them every year because we never got to play them and all of a sudden, this year, we're playing them twice," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "Coach (Kenny) Brooks does a great job there, and they'll be ready to play."
West Virginia claimed a 79-61 win over Virginia Tech in the Paradise Jam Island Division Title game on Nov. 25, 2017, in Melbourne, Florida. All five starters finished in double figures for the Mountaineers, led by 23 points and 11 rebounds from Muldrow. Davenport (15), senior guard Chania Ray (17), senior forward Kristina King (13) and Pardee (11) all ended the night in double figures as well.
Virginia Tech enters the WNIT Semifinals with a 22-13 overall record after going 6-10 in the ACC. After falling to Louisville, 70-73, in the ACC Quarterfinals, the Hokies have won four straight (Navy, George Mason, Fordham, Alabama) to earn their spot in the semifinals. Tech enters the matchup averaging 72.9 points per game and 39.7 rebounds per contest and is currently shooting 41.7 percent from the field, 32.8 percent from the perimeter and 72.4 percent at the free-throw line.
"They're playing a lot better at this time of year," Carey said. "Frankly, we are, too, so it should be a great game."
Taylor Emery leads the way with 18.3 points per game, one of three starters averaging in double figures. Regan Magarity leads the rebounding at 9.5 boards per game and is close to a double-double with 13.5 points per game as well.
The winner of Wednesday's game will face either Indiana or TCU on Saturday in a p.m. ET tip at a site to be determined.
