MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A pair of Mountaineers took home top-10 finishes as the West Virginia golf team finished as the runner-up at the 49th Annual Furman Intercollegiate, hosted by the Paladins at the Furman University golf course on Sunday.
"I'm really proud of the guys this week," coach Sean Covich said. "They displayed good attitudes and positive mindsets all week. I think we learned a lot from our mistakes at North Florida's event last week, at least I know I did as their coach. It was great to see them bounce back and claim second place. If we can keep the right mindset rest of the spring, some good golf will be ahead of us."
WVU shot four over on the day to finish with a score of 290-283-292=865 for one over in the tournament. No. 24 North Florida took home the team title at 17 under with a score of 847, while rival Virginia Tech was third at three over par with a three-round score of 867.
Sophomore Etienne Papineau led the Mountaineers, carding a four-under-par 212 in to tie for third place. After shooting 71-69 in the first and second rounds, Papineau finished the tournament with a 72, solidifying his spot in the top five.
Junior Max Sear also finished in the top 10, finishing in a three-way tie for sixth place. Sear finished 3-under par with a total of 71-70-72=213. He posted four birdies and four bogeys in today's final round.
After a solid 72-71 start, junior Tristan Nicholls shot a six-over 78 in the final round, dropping him to 28th place. Nicholls was even on the front nine, but had four bogeys and a double bogey on the back nine. He finished with a five-over 221.
Freshman Matthew Sharpstene carded two birdies and two bogeys in today's final round to move him into a tie for 42nd place. Sharpstene finished seven-over-par with a total of 78-73-72=223.
Despite six birdies and only two birdies in the third round, freshman Mark Goetz finished in 62nd place with an eleven-over-par total of 76-75-76=227.
Next up, WVU heads to the Kannapolis, North Carolina, for the Irish Creek Collegiate on April 7-8.
