Sunahara Reveals Spring Slate
March 22, 2018 10:15 AM | Volleyball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball coach Reed Sunahara announced the Mountaineers' 2018 spring schedule on Thursday.
WVU will face five opponents, concluding its spring with a home match against Ohio University on Saturday, April 21, at the WVU Coliseum. All home matches are free and open to the public.
"Our spring season is in full swing," said Sunahara, who enters his fourth season at the helm of the Mountaineers in 2018. "We started practice on Feb. 26, and we've been getting strong ever since. Our players have been working hard, trying to get one percent better every day. We have come a long way since I first arrived in Morgantown, but we still have a long way to go."
The Mountaineers open their spring season at George Washington on Saturday, March 24, inside the Charles E. Smith Center, at Noon ET. Following a week off from competition, WVU will travel to Athens, Ohio, for a round-robin tournament on Saturday, April 7.
The team is then slated to host an intrasquad match on Saturday, April 14, at 10 a.m., inside the WVU Coliseum. West Virginia will remain at home the following week, wrapping up its spring slate with a match against the Bobcats on Saturday, April 21, at 11 a.m. Fans in attendance can participate in a free youth clinic on the Coliseum court following the match.
Ten letterwinners from the fall are in the gym this spring looking to build on what was a promising conclusion to the 2017 season. The Mountaineers are coming off a 21-win season that far surpassed the 12-win campaign from 2016. West Virginia put together a solid list of "firsts" in Sunahara's third year, including upsetting No. 14 Kansas in its regular-season finale for its first-ever win over a top-25 team. Additionally, the Mountaineers advanced to the postseason for only the second time in program history and the first time since 1991.
