Mountaineers T-14th at The Hayt

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Starting the day in a weather delay, the West Virginia University golf team posted its second straight score of 298 to tie for 14th place at The John Hayt Invitational on Monday at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
WVU shot 296-298-298=892 to finish 28 over par, tying Coastal Carolina. No. 7 Auburn claimed the team title at 12 under with a score of 852, while No. 24 North Carolina was a stroke back in second at 11 under with an 853. Liberty was third with a score of 861 for three-under par.
"I thought we came out with a much better mindset today," coach Sean Covich said. "The guys had better attitudes and that's something we can build on moving forward. I look forward to watching these guys bounce back next weekend at Furman."
Mathew Sharpstene led the team, finishing four-over par and in a tie for 30th place. Entering the day at one over, he carded two birdies and five bogeys in the final round to finish three over with a total of 73-7375=220.
After shooting 72-79 on Sunday, Max Sear rebounded with a third-round score of 73. He birdied five of his final nine holes to cap the day at one over. He ended up eight-over par with a total of 224, finishing tied for 49th.
Teammate Etienne Papineau was two strokes behind Sear after shooting three-over par on the final day with a 75. His total of 77-75-74=226 put him at 10 over and tied for 59th place.
Tristan Nicholls tied for 63rd at 11 over, shooting 74-78-75=227. Mark Goetz shot 79-74079=232 to finish the tournament 16 over par and in 73rd place.
WVU travels to Greenville, South Carolina, later this week to compete in the Furman Intercollegiate. The Paladins will host the event Friday through Sunday at the Furman University Golf Course.
