MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Last night, four former West Virginia University football players joined an exclusive group of Super Bowl champions.
Linebacker Najee Goode, defensive back Rasul Douglas, wide receiver Shelton Gibson and running back Wendell Smallwood were part of the Philadelphia Eagles' thrilling 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Goode was credited with two tackles, one unassisted, playing on special teams while Douglas and Gibson also got into the game.
Smallwood was inactive.
This marks the most West Virginia University players ever affiliated with one Super Bowl team and also the most for a winning team.
In 1991, quarterback Jeff Hostetler and defensive tackle Mike Fox had key roles in the New York Giants' 20-19 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV played in Tampa, Florida.
Former WVU great Darryl Talley was a starting linebacker for the opposing Bills that night.
Other Mountaineers to own a Super Bowl ring include Chuck Howley (1973), Walter Easley (1981), Alvoid Mays (1992), Mike Logan (2006) and Bruce Irvin (2014).
The four this year make 21 former West Virginia University players involved with Super Bowl teams, the first being tight end Ken Herock with the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II.
