Tony's Take is presented by West Virginia Tourism
WACO, Texas - We've been traveling a good bit lately, and I've run into a bunch of Mountaineer fans who have questions about what's going on within the West Virginia basketball program.
Here are a few of the most frequently asked:
Will the Press Virginia style continue after this season?
Yes.
Bob Huggins knows the press makes WVU unique. It's West Virginia's best chance for long-term success, and it's worked well since its inception four years ago. Granted, this year's team is not as efficient as last season's. However, that's more personnel and mentality than scheme.
Is Sagaba Konate West Virginia's best-ever shot blocker?
Statistically, he still has a ways to go. However, provided he stays healthy, he will be WVU's all-time best. His improvement has been dramatic. Keep in mind he arrived in the United States when he was 17 years old and is playing just his fourth season of organized basketball. A year ago, he blocked 53 shots. He enters the Baylor game with 82 rejections. It's likely he'll never match current record holder D'or Fischer's single-season mark of 124, but he's just 57 blocks from Fischer's all-time school record of 190, which he'll likely get early next season.
Is this year's Big 12 a great or a good conference?
Let's begin with the fact that nationally there are no dominant teams destined to reach the Final Four. It's one of those years in which the word "upset" has to be used very carefully. It's obvious the Big 12 fits into that category. We've watched teams land knockout punches since league play began in late December. The Big 12 is the most competitive since WVU joined. However, that doesn't mean it will have a team in the Final Four or the Elite Eight. Quite honestly, nothing will surprise me.
What kind of a role will point guard Jordan McCabe have on next season's team?
He will definitely make WVU better in transition. His ability to handle the ball and his vision are far superior to anyone on the current roster. However, there will be a major adjustment when it comes to the physicality that he'll face each game. He's wise beyond his years. A former major college coach who worked with Jordan last summer told me he has, how shall we say this … an "intestinal fortitude that rivals a bull."
When will the documentary on Hot Rod Hundley be released?
After nearly three years of research, production and editing, the movie "Hot Rod" will be released in select markets in April. AT&T Sports Pittsburgh will debut the film on Tuesday evening, April 3. West Virginia Public Broadcasting will begin its run on Monday evening, April 16. AT&T Sports Rocky Mountain will bring the story to Utah and surrounding states on Sunday, April.
