MORGANTOWN, W.Va – Highlighted by five fall tournaments and 12 home dual matches in the spring, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has unveiled the tennis schedule for the 2017-18 season.
"As with every year, we are playing in individual tournaments," said women's tennis coach Miha Lisac, who is entering his fifth year at the helm. "We have five tournaments planned for the fall semester."
West Virginia opens the fall season in Cleveland, Ohio, at the Cleveland State Invitational from Oct. 6-8. The Mountaineers will face host Cleveland State, Akron and Cincinnati.
The following weekend, WVU will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regionals Oct. 13-16.
The Mountaineers will return to Morgantown on Oct. 20-22 to host the Martha Thorn Pink Invitational. The tournament will consist of players from James Madison, Miami (Ohio), Marshall and WVU.
WVU will head to the Louisville Tennis Classic, Nov. 3-5 and will face Louisville, Ball State and Michigan State. The Mountaineers will wrap up tournament play at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Florida, Nov. 10-12. Along with Florida State, the FSU invitational features Alabama, Auburn, UCF and Wisconsin.
West Virginia will open the spring season with a three-match homestand, taking on James Madison on Feb. 3, VCU on Feb. 4 and George Washington on Feb. 10.
"I feel that we have a good mix of teams in our nonconference schedule," Lisac said. "We have a lot of home matches this year, which is always great to not have to travel prior to conference play starting."
All home matches will be held at the Ridgeview Racquet Club until weather permits outdoor play.
On Feb. 16, the Mountaineers will travel to Akron, Ohio, to take on the Akron Zips. The next day, they will square off against East Tennessee State, in Akron.
After the two-match trip, the Mountaineers host 2017 Mid-American Conference Champion, Buffalo, on Feb. 24, Towson, on Feb. 25 and Old Dominion on March 4.
West Virginia continues its non-conference slate in College Park, Maryland, against Maryland on March 11.
WVU will then face the most grueling part of its schedule as Big 12 Conference play features six 2016 NCAA Tennis Tournament qualifiers.
"There are no off weeks when we start against Big 12 competition," Lisac said. "There is going to be great competition. Year in and year out, we are always challenged at the highest level."
The Mountaineers open conference play on the road at Oklahoma on March 16 and at Oklahoma State on March 18.
West Virginia then returns to Morgantown for a two-match homestand beginning with a contest against non-conference opponent Duquesne on March 23, followed by Iowa State on March 24.
The squad then travels to Huntington to take on in-state foe, Marshall, on March 31. The Mountaineers bested the Thundering Herd in 2017, 4-3.
WVU will welcome a pair of opponents from the Sunflower State April 6-8, taking on Kansas State and Kansas, respectively.
The following week, the Mountaineers will swing through Texas to take on Baylor on April 13 and Texas on April 15.
The Mountaineers will close the regular season with two matches at home beginning with 2017 Big 12 Champion Texas Tech on April 20. WVU will honors its two seniors, Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez on April 22, as the Mountaineers square off against TCU.
West Virginia will begin postseason play with the Big 12 Championship from April 26-29 in Austin, Texas.
