
Flores Honored, WVU Ranks No. 5

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Vanessa Flores of the West Virginia University women's soccer team earned a pair of awards today, as she was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week and landed on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.
Additionally, the Mountaineers (7-2) moved up one spot to No. 5 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll.
A native of Baytown, Texas, Flores' honors are the first of her career and follow another first, as she scored her first career goal in the Mountaineers' 1-0 win at No. 14 Princeton on Sept. 15.
In addition to her score, Flores helped the WVU backline deny the Tigers and La Salle a shot on-goal. The Mountaineers defeated the Explorers, 1-0, on Sept. 17, in Princeton, New Jersey.
The Mountaineers held their opponents to nine combined shots and denied La Salle a corner kick. The two clean sheets pushed the team's season total to six.
With today's new national ranking, WVU has now resided within the top five each week but two this season.
UCLA (7-0-1) continues to rank No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. Stanford (7-1) ranks No. 2, South Carolina (7-1) sits at No. 3 and Duke (8-1) ranks No. 4.
Florida (7-1) follows the Mountaineers at No. 6, and Penn State (6-2) ranks No. 7. North Carolina (5-2) and Wisconsin (7-1) rank No. 8 and No. 9, respectively, and USC (6-1) rounds out the top 10.
The Mountaineers also rank No. 6 in this week's Soccer America Women's Top 25 and No. 8 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's Division I Top 25 National Rankings. Additionally, the team checks in at No. 10 in the first NCAA RPI of the 2017 season. South Carolina ranks No. 1.
Texas (8-0), the Mountaineers' Sept. 24 opponent, ranks as high as No. 17 this week. The Longhorns also sit at No. 3 in the NCAA RPI.
WVU opens the defense of its five straight Big 12 Conference regular-season titles at Baylor on Friday, Sept. 22, at 8 p.m. EST, at Betty Lou Mays Field in Waco, Texas.
