MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four from the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will shoot at the 2017 United States Rifle/Pistol Fall Selection Match on Sept. 18-19, in Fort Benning, Georgia.
Senior Elizabeth Gratz, juniors Will Anti and Ginny Thrasher and sophomore Morgan Phillips will be among the 80 competitors shooting in selection matches for men's and women's 50m 3 position rifle, as well as the non-Olympic 300-meter events. Each day's competition will be followed by a final.
"This match begins the qualification process for the 2018 World Championships, and the top athletes from the United States will be competing," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "While it's at the start of our season, it serves as an excellent early test and a way for these student-athletes to gain valuable experience. I'm sure this competition will set each of them up well for our fall season."
This week's match is the first of a two-part qualification system which will help determine 2018 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championships participants. Results from this week also will help determine selections for the season-opening 2018 World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, March 2-12.
Once competition concludes, the quartet will travel back to Morgantown before opening the 2017-18 season with their Mountaineer teammates in Charleston, South Carolina, on Sept. 23. WVU opens the year against No. 9 NC State at The Citadel's Inouye Marksmanship Center on Saturday at 8 a.m.
