CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (Nov. 25, 2017) – West Virginia University women's basketball coach
Mike Carey was honored in his hometown of Clarksburg, West Virginia, on Tuesday afternoon.
Mayor Catherine Goings unveiled a sign dedicated to Carey on behalf of the city during a ceremony at Jackson Square. The sign will be permanently displayed on the Hewes Ave parking structure above U.S. Route 50. Drivers departing the city will see the sign, which is opposite of fellow native and Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher's sign, which was dedicated in June of 2016.
"On behalf of the City of Clarksburg, we would like to present you a token of our appreciation for all your recent accomplishments," Goings said. "We have a sign for you today that we will proudly display on the Hewes Avenue Parking Facility as a permanent fixture to recognize all that you've done. As people enter and leave our city they will see your sign. We are so proud that you are part of Clarksburg."
Carey is the winningest coach in WVU women's basketball program history with 352 following a 6-0 start in the 2017-18 season. He starred at Liberty High, who retired his No. 32 jersey, before a standout career at Salem.
"I'm very proud to be from this area," Carey said. "When I travel throughout the country, I always sell the people. We have great facilities throughout West Virginia, but it's the people that are the great ones. I am humbled, honored and appreciative."
